Our first assumption is, that White has a very bad position, as his king is struggling in the crossfire of enemy pieces, and there's no way to retreat. However, GM Anand truly knew that the black king had limited options to move, so he embraced it with a direct attack. After the insane move Bg6!!, Black must care to avoid the checkmate, so he has to let his queen be captured. Otherwise, e.g. after Qxd1, White sacs the e-rook with Rxe6+ and there's a free way for dark-square bishop to checkmate with Bxh6#.
