Fantastic killer move by Bobby Fischer - Chess Poster
Fantastic killer move by Bobby Fischer - Chess Poster
One of the best moves ever played by Bobby Fischer was during his game against René Letelier in the 1960 Leipzig Olympiad. If White moves Qxf4!!, the only square for the king to retreat from the fields of battle is e3. But, after Bh6#, White's king is attacked, as the great monarch is not able to escape anymore, because Bobby Fischer's bishop controls the e3 square simultaneously. If White plays e.g. Kf2 instead of taking Fischer's queen, Black plays Ng4+ and the charge of black pieces would crush the standalone king. Mr. Letelier did not wait for that tragic dawnfall but resigned immediately.
